Notes From Samuel Woodburn's 'Portraits of 100 Illustrious Characters'.

Bust portrait of William Shakespeare, directed slightly to the left, but looking towards the viewer. He wears a dark doublet, embellished with silver threads, a stiff, and a pointed ruff.

Inscription reads: 'From an original Picture formerly in the possession of Prince Rupert, Now in the collection of His Grace Archibald Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, &c. &c. at Marylebone Park, London.'

Robert Dunkarton (1744 - 1811) was a British mezzotinter, but began his career as a portrait painter. Between 1774 and 1779, he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
