Notes Bust portrait of William Shakespeare, turned slightly to the left, but looking towards the viewer. He wears a wide lace collar, but little else of his clothing can be distinguished. In the upper left corner of the image, the date 1610 is given, and Shakespeare's age of 40 at this date.

Inscription reads: 'From an Original Picture by Cornelius Jansen in the Collection of C. Jennens Esqr.'

The portrait was originally intended to be an illustration to Charles Jennens' 1770 edition of 'King Lear'.
