Composite portraits of the counsellors for the seven bishops put on trial in 1688, within decorative oval boarders and scroll work.

On June 29 and June 30, 1688, seven bishops were brought to trial before the Court of King's Bench on a charge of seditious libel. The previous April, King James II had re-issued his Declaration of Indulgence, and on May 4 he had published an order that the Declaration be read out in every church in the country. On May 18 the seven bishops had submitted a petition to the King in which they refused to obey the King's order.
