Trouves Dans Les Excavations D Herculanum, Stabia Et Pompeia, Paris, M. David, 1780-81, an eight volume set of books with 860 engravings of the antiquities of Herculaneum, Stabia, and Pompeii. Excavations at Pompeii began in 1738. The first five volumes in Maréchal's work (i.e. volumes I, II, IIII, and V in the present set) are devoted to painting, and volumes VI and VII are concerned with bronzes. Books such as Maréchal's, that documented the discoveries in Italy, reflected the growing interest in classical motifs and at the same time had an important influence on the styles and themes in neo-classical motifs in 18th century European and North American art and design.
