Written by Pierre Jacques François Girard, a former naval officer, 'L'academie de l'homme d'épée, exercises deffensifs et offensifs' is a detailed illustrated fencing manual written from the perspective of a military officer. The publication, issued with 116 illustrations, records a number of innovations in the art of swordplay, particularly in regard to the small sword. Within this publication, Girard also discusses the use of the hand grenade, the musket, and the flail.

Pierre Jacques François Girard was a naval officer and master of French arms. He authored two books on weaponry the first published in 1740 with the title 'Traité de la perfection sur fait des armes' ('Treaty of perfection-made weapons') the second published in 1755 titled 'L'academie de l'homme d'épée, exercises deffensifs et offensifs', ('The Academy of Swordsman: The perfect science or defensive and offensive exercises').
