A beautifully atmospheric print of the pagoda at Yanaka, Tokyo. The scene shows a figure hurrying past a pagoda on a rainy evening. Blue bokashi shading over a pale pink wash has been used to create the illusion of a rain-dark sky. A single street lamp shines in front of the pagoda, the light reflecting on the rain soaked ground.

Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and worked in Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga style. He started creating woodblock prints for the publisher Watanabe in 1919 and by the late 1940s he had designed more than 50 prints for Watanabe publishing house. In the 1950s he published bird and animal prints, landscapes and "famous views" with the publisher Unsodo - all together more than 100 designs.
