A full length portrait of Jacob Powell, a butcher from Stebbing, Essex, who was known for his extraordinary size, weighing 40 stone when he died. Powell is depicted standing, facing the viewer. His jacket a waistcoat is open, exposing his rotund belly. In his right hand he holds a powdered wig, his left hand dabbing his bald head with a handkerchief. Johann Jakob Haid (1704 - 1767) was German painter, publisher and engraver. He trained in Augsburg where he is likely to have taught enamel in 1745. The father of Johann Elias Haid, he is also known to have founded a large publishing house. David Ogborne was an English painter from Chelmsford, Essex.
