A view of the mill at Iffley from William Westall's 'Twenty-Five Views on the Thames, at Richmond, Eton, Windsor, and Oxford'. Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) was an English printer and publisher. Born in London to French parents, Hullmandel initially trained as an artist. In 1817 in Munich, he met the inventor of lithography Alois Senefelder (1771 - 1834). The following year Hullmandel opened his own press in London. A major figure in the advancement of lithography, he was responsible for numerous technical developments including lithotint and colour printing. From 1845, Hullmandel worked in partnership with Joseph Fowell Walton. The imprint Hullmandel & Walton continued to be used until the 1860s. William Westall (1781-1850) was a British topographical draughtsman and engraver. He became an Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1812. He was the younger brother of the painter and illustrator Richard Westall. Rodwell & Martin was a London publishing firm active between 1819 and 1835, specialising in lithography. Condition: Tear to right margin. Heavy creasing to sheet. Thinning and loss to lower right corner. Surface dirt to sheet. |
