A view of Founders Tower at Magdalen College. This etching was first published in 1880 as part of Andrew Lang's Oxford: Brief historical and descriptive notes. Robert Kent Thomas (1816-1884), was a British painter, etcher and lithographer. Although he is best-known for his highly detailed architectural and topographical prints, Thomas also produced caricatures, maritime prints and natural history studies. Born and educated in London, Thomas worked early on in his career as a lithographic draughtsman for the publishers Day and Haghe. Thomas rose to become Head of the Artistic Department, and married William Day's daughter Mary. In 1851 Ackermann & Co. published Souvenir of the Great Exhibtion, a set of six prints which included Thomas' The British Department viewed towards the transept. From 1870 onwards, many of his etchings appeared in periodicals including The Portfolio. He was an original member of the Society of Painter Etchers, a member of the Langham Sketching Club, and occasionally exhibited at the Royal Academy. Condition: Sheet toned |
