Notes A portrait of Lord Effingham, standing in profile to the right, holding a long slender staff in his right hand, a short staff in the left, the two staffs of office for which he was known as the Devil on two sticks. Though he is plainly dressed, wearing his own hair, he wears a sword.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Howard, 3rd Earl of Effingham (1746-1791), principally celebrated for resigning his commission and refusal to take part in the American Revolutionary War. While remaining strictly neutral, he was celebrated for his actions by the Patriots, and a number of American towns and counties were named in his honour.
