Notes View of the old glass and steel factories at Le Creusot in Burgundy, France.

The glass factory was founded in 1786, producing the finest glass crystals, and the official supplier of these crystals to Queen Marie-Antionette. After the death of Marie-Antoinette in 1793, the factory lost its former glory, and was eventually bought by its competitor Baccarat, who shut the factory down.

The first steel factory in le Creusot was founded around the same time as the glass factory, in the same area, as the ground here was rich in iron and copper. The factory specialised in the production of canons, which ended up being a fruitful industry. The factory is able to expand unto the glass factory, and exports steel to the rest of France through the new canal between Saone and Loire.
After the French Revolution, the steel factory is bought by a family of steel barons called the Schneiders, and the old glass factory is turned into a new home for the family, and eventually rebuilt into a castle, still known today as "chateau de la verrerie".
