According to Clayton, this is one of a group of six prints of peasant girls in regional costume that Bunbury would have encountered on his grand tour. The plates were sold at the Bretherton sale of 1799, second day, lot 147, as 'A set of 6, girls of different countries', with 20 impressions. The set was issued with titles in French or Italian, published by Bretherton in 1772-1773. (J.6.23-28) |
