Notes Karl I, Herzog von Braunschweig (Brunswick, 1713-80, Brunswick), came to the ducal throne in 1735. He removed the residence from Wolfenbüttel to Brunswick, and lived on a scale which overburdened the resources of his duchy. He was greatly interested in art, literature, and intellectual matters generally, founded the Collegium Carolinum in 1745,
