A scarce engraving which has been mis-titled in the inscription line below as A View of Magdalen College... looking across the Cherwell and Merton fields towards the towers and spire of Christ Church and Merton College. James Green (1729-1759) was an engraver, painter, and draughtsman. Working Oxford in the mid-18th century, he was a pupil of the eldest Basire. In 1756 he became the engraver to the University of Oxford and in the following year, engraver to the Society of Antiquaries. He died at just 30 year of age, at which point he was succeeded by his brother Benjamin. Condition: Chips and tears to sheet edges. Toning from previous mount. Creasing to sheet. Tape to verso. |
