Notes A scene at Court, the throne partly visible on the extreme right, the King and Queen conversing. The centre figure is the tall 'Plenipotentiary' or Turkish Minister, wearing a jewelled and feathered turban, Turkish trousers, and a long furred robe. He looks down at the fat Lady Buckinghamshire; she gazes up at him with both hands raised in astonishment. Behind him, Mrs. Fitzherbert holds up the skirt of his robe, as if to inspect it, her right hand raised in astonishment.

Isaac Cruikshank (1756-1810) was a painter and caricaturist born in Edinburgh. His sons Isaac Robert Cruikshank and George Cruikshank also became artists, and the latter in particular achieved fame as an illustrator and caricaturist. Cruikshank is known for his social and political satire. He was a contemporary of James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson, and he was part of what has been called the 'golden age of British caricature'. He worked for the publisher John Roach and for the print dealers S.W. Fores and Johnny Fairburn. He also collaborated with G.M. Woodward and later with his son George. Cruikshank died of alcohol poisoning at the age of fifty-five as a result of a drinking contest.

Beneath the image are eight lines of verse relating to the scene.
