Sydney Carline (1888-1929) was born in London. Both his brother, Richard, and his sister Hilda, were also artists, with his sister marrying the artist Stanley Spencer, who was a friend of Richard's. The three siblings were children of the artist, George Carline (1855-1920). They studied at the Slade School and in Paris under Tudor Hart. Sydney was an official war artist with the RAF during World War I. He exhibited with the London Group, becoming a member in 1924. From 1921 to 1929 he was Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford. He provided some illustrations for T. E. Lawrence's Revolt in the Desert.
