Notes A fine scarce portrait of Gladstone as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

William Ewart Gladstone (1809 - 1898) was one of the most dominant political figures during the reign of Queen Victoria. Gladstone was a British Liberal statesman, and something of a gerontocrat, for in a career that lasted over sixty years he held the position of Prime Minister on four separate occasions. When he resigned for the final time at the age of eighty four, he became Britain's oldest serving Prime Minister. Gladstone also served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer for four terms.
