Edition 77/250. Signed in pencil. A view of St. Johns from the Canterbury quadrangle. Ernst Gustav Zipperer (1888-1982) was a German painter and printmaker. Born in Ulm, Zipperer attended the arts and crafts schools in Hanover and in Hildburghausen. Zipperer served as an officer during World War I. He was seriously wounded in Russia in 1915 due to a head shot and lost his left eye. After the war he moved to Berlin and started teaching art at Berlin-Friedenau Grammar School, where he taught until 1940. Zipperer created most of his drypoint etchings whilst living in Berlin between 1918-1940. With his drypoint etchings Ernst Zipperer became known in Europe and America through the successful distribution of his pictures by some art publishers. Condition: Light toning from previous mount. |
