Notes |
A rare eighteenth century map of 'European Tartary,' now parts of modern day Ukraine and Russia, centred on Crimea, the Dnieper river, and the northern Black Sea and Sea of Asov, encompassing in addition parts of Russia, Moldova and Romania (here part of historic Bulgaria), and eastern Ukraine (at the time of publication part of the kingdom of Poland). The Crimean peninsula, as well as adjoining parts of the Kherson and Krasnodar regions, are washed in pink, while other provincial and national borders are outlined in hand colour. Principal cities, towns, and forts are picked out in red, and a large compass rose adorns the western coast of the Black Sea. In the bottom right corner, a large title cartouche is flanked by cherubs in military dress of both Christian and Islamic type. Johann Michael Probst (1727-1776) was a German mapmaker, engraver, and publisher, one of a large family of Augsburg publishers, engravers, and booksellers. The son of the prolific Johann Balthazar Probst, an engraver of vues-de-optique, he was succeeded in his map-publishing business by his three sons, all named Johann, so usually known by their second names, Michael (the Younger), Georg, and Conrad. Condition: Central vertical fold, as issued. Damp staining, tide marks, and surface abrasion to left and right sides of map and sheet. Blank on verso. |
