Notes |
A late eighteenth century map of the northern Black Sea, the Crimean peninsula, and parts of modern Ukraine and Russia, from Zatta's rare but important Italian world atlas, the Atlante Novissimo. The map focusses on the region historically known in western Europe as 'Little Tartary.' Provincial borders are outlined in hand colour, and rivers, mountains, and forests are shown pictorially. In Circassia (modern Krasnodar), an encampment of domed tents represents a Tatar settlement. At the time of the map's creation, much of western Ukraine, including Kyiv, and modern day Moldova, were part of the Kingdom of Poland. In the bottom left, a title cartouche in the form of an unfurled banner is flanked by Tatar tents, cannons, and military standards. Antonio Zatta (fl.1757-1797) was an Italian geographer, historian, printer, and publisher, active in Venice in the second half of the eighteenth century. Few details are known about his life, but his output was prolific. Chief amongst his publications was his Atlante Novissimo, a four volume atlas of the world. As Zatta himself attested, the atlas contained a suite of the most up to date maps of the world yet produced in Italy, including some of the earliest adoptions of the discoveries of Cook in the mapping of Australia, New Zealand, and the south Pacific. Guiliano Zuliani (c.1730-1814) was an Italian engraver, active in Venice, and best known for the maps he engraved for Antonio Zatta's Atlante Novissimo, though he also produced plates on diverse subjects for other Italian and French publishers. Giovanni Marco Pitteri (1703-1767) was an Italian engraver, predominantly of works after Italian masters, religious scenes, and portraits. A native of Venice, he was also one of a number of draughtsmen and engravers to have contributed to the Atlante Novissimo of the geographer and mapmaker Antonio Zatta.
