A wonderfully atmospheric and uncommon engraving of Oxford High Street at dusk, after the rain. University and Queens college flank the High Street with the spires of St. Mary's and All Saints church featuring in the background. The pavements are populated with figures of both town and gown and the road features horse and carts and the tramline down the centre. The street lights and shadows are reflected in the puddles formed following a downpour.

Edward Slocombe (1850 - 1915) was born in London and part of a noted family of artists. Slocombe was a painter, etcher and mezzotint engraver. Some of his etchings were published in The Art Journal and the Portfolio, also a number of etchings of church buildings were published by the Fine Art Society. Member of the RPE (Royal Society of Painter-Etchers.)
