Notes A 16th century Ottoman costume portrait, similar to those that feature in the borders of 17th century carte-a-figures maps, from Pietro Bertelli's 'Diversarum nationum habitus' (Habits of different nations) published in Padua in 1589. The work consisted mostly of plates, illustrating people from all over Europe in their contemporary dress. The publication also included plates of American and African dress, as well as specific portraits, alongside Venetian scenery and European monuments.
