Notes A portrait of John Henry Newman, half-length, in profile to the left, dressed in a surplice over his frockcoat with bands at his neck and with spectacles on his nose. The portrait is almost identical to another anonymous print titled 'A Sketch from Memory 1841' published by James Wyatt & Son, High Street, Oxford, March 1841 (O'Donoghue 8). This print, however, appears to be from a possibly incomplete or only partially published series of Oxford Theologians, a portrait of Edward Bouverie Pusey in the same style titled "From Christ Church College, Oxford.", published for the proprietor 202, Sloane St. Chelsea is engraved within the plate as "Oxford Theologians, No. 1" (O'Donoghue 1) and a print of Benjamin Symons titled "St. Mary Magdalene" appears to be from the same series.

John Henry Newman (1801-1890), Cardinal and theologian. He was an English Roman Catholic priest, cardinal and poet. Newman was a leading figure in the Oxford Movement with John Keble and Edward Bouverie Pusey. He converted to Catholicism, and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1847. Newman's autobiography Apologia pro vita sua (1864) is a classic example of the spiritual autobiography, an account of personal faith and spiritual development. Written in defence of his controversial conversion to Catholicism, the Apologia appeared in seven weekly pamphlets. Newman, who became a Cardinal in 1879, hoped his autobiography would convince the protestant public that his conversion was sincere. He also wrote several other books all of which influenced the development of the Catholic church. Cardinal Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the United Kingdom on 19 September 2010.
