Signed in pencil. A separately published striking coloured mezzotint of St. Cecilia. The print shows Cecilia looking off to the right, her features softly captured and her dark hair loose and flowing over her shoulders. A halo is seen behind her head which is surrounded by an intricately detailed flowering tree dominating the background. She is wearing a smock which has a beautifully embroidered neckline. The 'Art Journal' originally opposed the emerging Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with its articles attacking the the movement and its supporter, John Ruskin. When the editor, Samuel Carter Hall, retired in 1880, the Art Journal changed its stance. Frederick Miller was a British artist and engraver who was active between 1886-1897. Condition: A small repaired puncture to the top right of the image. Small scratch to lower left arm area of the image. Toning from previous mount. Framed in a large Victorian gilt frame. |
