A small, interesting map of 'Grand Bretagne' or Great Britain and Ireland from 'Geographie Universelle...' by P. Bufier de la 'Compagnie de Jesus.' The borders of Ireland, Scotland, and England and Wales are outlined in hand colour, and the title is enclosed in a simple banner cartouche. Unusually, England, Wales, and Scotland are shown divided up into their historic kingdoms, rather than into counties, though Ireland is still divided into the four provinces.
Claude Buffier (25th May 1661 – 17th May 1737) was a theologian, geographer, and Jesuit brother from Warsaw, Poland, who worked in Paris. Aside from his theological works, Buffier authored a number of geographic texts, among them the 'Géographie Universal,' which was posthumously published in Paris in 1749 which ran to several editions.
Condition: Lower right margin trimmed to border of map as issued, now infilled. Small repaired tear to right border of map. Vertical and horizontal folds as issued.
