A fashionable tourist destination in the eighteenth century, Stowe House and its grounds and gardens were further popularised by the publication of Seeley's guide book. Between 1744 and 1797 'Stowe: a description [...]' was reprinted seventeen times, with continual improvements and revisions. Published and sold by John Seeley in Buckingham, the guide contained numerous engravings by the author, as well as Fairchild's birds-eye plan.
