Flowers of the Floating World: Women in Japanese Prints and Photographs

Sanders of Oxford, in association with Arnaud Delas, presents one of the first British exhibitions to explore the depiction of courtesans and geisha in both Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and early photography. This broad survey covers one and half centuries of the visual culture of the demimonde or ukiyo [which literally means the 'floating world'].

Print designers and photographers represented in the exhibition include: Chikanobu, Eisen, Eizan, Hiroshige, Hokkei, Hokusai, Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni, Utamaro, Yoshitoshi, Beato, Farsari Kimbei, Ogawa and von Stillfried.
