Signed in pencil Francis Seymour Haden (1818 - 1910) was an etcher, mezzotint engraver and surgeon (he practiced medicine until 1887). In 1847 he married Deborah (Dasha) Delano Whistler, sister of the artist. For the next twenty years, he enjoyed a close friendship with J A M Whistler whose etching style clearly influenced Haden's. In 1880 founded the Society of Painter-Etchers, but most of his later work was in mezzotint. Harrington 76.I, Schneiderman 72 vi/xvii |
